Hello Church! I am excited about this 21 day journey! As you know, we are committed to offering up our first days of the new year to God; setting aside 21 days to create some space in our lives for God to fill. Twenty one days of changing our routine and stirring up a greater dependency on God by eliminating some of the comforts we have come to rely on. I also believe that these next 21 days will bring about miraculous breakthrough, direction, healing, understanding and restoration! And, that is just the tip of the iceberg. This page has some basic information on fasting, links to resources, as well as the link to our 21 day bible reading plan specifically designed for this season. I am cheering you on through this season and praying that God would heighten your awareness of Himself in your life. This is NOT easy. But, having built the spiritual discipline of fasting into my own life, I can tell you without a doubt that it IS worth it. Go into these next 21 days committed and expectant!

Prayer & Fasting

The spiritual discipline of fasting is temporarily going without something good to more permanently and passionately going after something greater. GOD.

Why fast:

Because we want to hunger for God more than anything. And, because Jesus expects it of His followers. In Matthew 6:16 Jesus says "when you fast" not "if you fast". There are a few different types of fasts observed by Christians. One of the most common types of food fasts is the "Daniel Fast." Google and Pinterest are great ways to find recipes and food guides for a Daniel Fast. 

The Daniel Fast comes out of Daniel chapter 1 in the bible. A guy named Daniel and a few of his friends find themselves in captivity by an enemy. They are offered the choice foods (meat, wine, bread, etc) of the Babylonian king. Their traditions would not allow them to eat those foods and so Daniel appeals to the guard and asks if they can try something different:

Daniel 1:12-16 "12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead." (NIV)

What fasting is NOT:

Simply forfeiting food is not a biblical fast. A biblical fast has an emphasis on prayer, often substituting time spent eating with prayer and time in scripture. Be intentional about setting aside time for prayer and reading your bible. Chances are that your fast will increase your sensitivity to God. What fasting produces:

  • Greater dependency on God.

  • Self control.

  • Decreased desire to satisfy self.

  • Spiritual strength.

  • Humility.

  • Greater ability to hear God.

  • Intimacy with Jesus.

What you fast will be up to you and God. But, don't offer God anything cheap. Give up something that you regularly enjoy. In addition to food ask God to reveal what activities you should consider temporarily going without. FOR EXAMPLE: Social media, T.V., a regular sports league, etc. Something that takes up space in your calendar that if removed for a short amount of time will create more space for God to fill!
